" There are many things about painting wild horses that thrill me... their long tangled manes and tales, battle scars, tough lean bodies, and their fiery eyes... the dust and the desert light. I've been in situations where the stallions would sweep towards me to guard his precious band. As I painted this stallion, the word 'domino' kept going through my mind. "These wild horses let me use some of my favorite painting techniques: scumbling, impasto, splattering, palette knife, etc. These beautiful grays are full of color - greens and reds mostly; also indigo, cobalt turquoise, mars violet and naples yellow. There are no "black and white" grays in this painting. But the thrill of all thrills for me was how the vivid personalities of this group of young stallions lept out from the canvas from the very start! When the young colts began to mature and "feel their oats" the herd sire boots them out. He stands no competition! These outcasts seek out their own, forming lively "bachelor bands" for protection and companionship. They "hang out" and bother each other continually, engaging in all sorts of mach battles and tests of strength until each one becomes able to form and defend his own herd." - Nancy Glazier

Spring in Kentucky! There is no sight to compare to the magic of a bluegrass morning among the thoroughbreds. The night's fog, becomes silvery at first light. As the sun escapes the gentle hills, the whole world is suddenly bathed in gold. The sleek mares and the new foals are turned into the lush, dewy pastures. Elegant, perfect and beautiful, they take my breath away. Born to run, the flits thing they do is fly around the field... all legs and tails and wind. The foals caper and hop in comical twisting leaps, but never far from their mother's soft sides. One grey mare stands out from the rest. She is fleckeled all over, like pewter in a silvery sky, and her velvety black foal is like the concentrated essence of those stars. What hopes were born with this dusky baby? Is he to be the one? Time: Fall, early A.M. Place: The edge of a hayfield... a favorite place for the wild to slip like a shadow, into view. Action: Sometime between the dog days of summer and the trials of winter, there is an abrupt change... groups of richly adorned bucks, having feasted among comrades for many long lazy days, suddenly begin to get on each other's nerves. They become testy, restless and territorial. A younger more foolhardy buck has just pushed "the big guy" too far, and is being taught a lesson.
